What is real-time court reporting?
Real-time court reporting is the instant translation of a court reporter’s shorthand on a stenotype into legible, speakable, readable language. The stenotype has 22 keys and coded phrases that appear as regular language on a computer screen. The screen can be shared live at a deposition or in court and can be connected to the computers of attorneys and judge in a courtroom so that all parties have access to the transcript.
Benefits of Real-Time Court Reporting
At a deposition, a live transcript makes it easier to clarify what was said and to edit testimony. In court, attorneys can gain a strategic advantage.
- Ability to take notes, highlight sections, and flag portions of testimony to be explored later all while legal teams on both sides are viewing the transcript.
- Rephrasing takes less time when the questioning attorney can quickly review exactly what they asked and formulate an updated question.
- Discredit testimony especially if the witness is long-winded or offers more in their answer than what was asked. In other words, witnesses can be caught in lies or half-truths faster.
Overall, the benefits of real-time court reporting make legal proceedings, whether deposition or litigation, more efficient and could actually save time for all involved.
