Get Organized - Time Saving Tips for Your Firm

Are you struggling to find time to accomplish tasks? For every task you remove from the to do list, do you add another one? For growing law firms, there is often a sense of being stuck in the hamster wheel, unable to see the results of your hard work, and that is exceedingly frustrating. It’s time to rethink your day with these time saving tips. 

Subtract, Don’t Add to Your To Do List

The reality is that we live in a complicated and busy world. My husband likes to remind me that it is better to subtract rather than add when it comes to the number of personal, community, and business obligations that we have but I still try to make things more stressful than they need to be.

Take that time I triple booked us for an entire weekend. When it came time to decide what to do, we were both overwhelmed and ended up missing out on seeing friends because we couldn’t be in three places at once. By the end of the weekend, we were just too tired to move. He gently reminded me that we needed to remember to keep it simple. The same goes for your law firm.

Keep Systems Simple

Often lawyers are focused on systems that are more complicated than their firm needs. In fact, many businesses struggle with choosing technology that fits their business. Instead, they choose systems that are challenging to understand and teach to new employees. Instead of struggling and wasting time, find systems that work for you and your team. Keep in mind the goals necessary for growing your Las Vegas firm.

You don’t need to install the latest software just because your friend is using it or because you heard about it at a conference.

Identify what is necessary for your firm today, what you anticipate the needs will be in the future, and use technology that can grow with the firm. Often there are free versions of software for time and task tracking for small teams. There are also paid versions as you add employees.

Prioritize Your Day

 Stop feeling like you’ve only added to your to do list and start prioritizing what is most important to you both in your business and personal life. Complete the most important tasks at the beginning of the day. For me, I get up early during the week or work a few hours on the weekend when no one else is online. This forces me to be efficient, and also gets me prepared for a successful week.

For tasks that you haven’t finished, ask yourself:

  • What are my short and long term goals?
  • How important is this task to meeting those goals?
  • Can the task be delegated?

You may find that you’re spending time making appointments or answering emails that could be done by an assistant.

When it comes to time saving tips for firms, take my husband’s advice to subtract, not add. Keep systems simple and understand what your priorities are. I promise the hamster wheel will slow down and you will see light at the end of the busy tunnel.
